I'm looking into being able to auto-generate a Ponyhead-formatted string so that whenever a new card is added, I could just send the Ponyhead creator this string and he can added it to their database rather quickly.
If we had the card templates generate such strings, would there be a way to perhaps display that string on the screen for myself/administrators only to see? Or would there be a better/alternative way of doing this?
There are enough function in the wiki language to generate something like that from our templates.
How is this string constructed? I never used the ponyhead creator.
But yeah from my perspective that should be that complicated.
With the upcoming release of the second set, Canterlot Nights, two of the greatest ways you could help to update the wiki is to start adding pages for the new cards as they start to appear, and to add rulings, errata, etc. to existing cards.
Adding a page for new cards is as simple as copying the template from an existing card page and editing the values for the template. Maybe simple isn't the right word, seeing as how each template has a lot of different variables. xD But rest assured that you can always ask me or any other member of the wikia staff on how to do this or that.
Rulings and errata are constantly changing, such that on the wiki we are constantly trying to make the rulings and errata displayed here:
easy to read and understand
have a certified source available
To that end, please don't feel offended or anything if someone changes the wording around on a particular ruling you've added; nine times out of ten it'll just be to make the ruling easier for newer players to understand or to be consistent with other rulings. If it's a ruling that currently applies to one or more card, consider making it a template and adding it to our Ruling Templates category page.
Thanks again for your edits, and please contact me if there's anything I can help you with!
I worked on a few wikis before, but it is my first time in a wikia wiki.
I wanted to change the templates for troublemaker, resource and event, but they are protected. I understand why they are protected, so I would like to propose the change to the templates, because I guess you are an admin.
Currently they have this field Card Types. For example Nightmare Moon has Troublemaker and Epic. This it technically not correct. She has only one Card Type, which is Troublemaker (Comprehensive Rules (206.2)) and two traits which are Troublemaker and Epic (Comprehensive Rules (207.1)). these two rules make Event, Resource and Troublemaker a Card Type and a Trait.
The word Firend on Friend cards is an odd ball since it is technically a word under the art but it is not seperated by a dot from other traits as described in (207.2). Therfore I think it is kind of save to assume that this 'word' is part of the art. Well at least that is my current take on the rules.
Can this be done, can I do it? Or are you perhaps the wrong person to ask altogether?
I agree on the template changes for troublemakers/resources/events, I will make sure those templates are updated by the end of the day. I think "Friend" might technically be a trait (if only to differenciate the Friend cards from MC cards) but it can be left off for now unless/until they address it later.
Thanks, but now the card type information is missing. It is not really tragic, but it could be also easyly added to the templates because it can be hard coded. The troublemaker template will always have 'card type: Troublemaker'. Another thing I noticed is that the Traits of Friend and Mane characteres are listed right above.the 'Game Text' line. I like that because when you scan the card from top to bottom this is where the trait information appears.
So again on those three templates: on the position where the traits are now, the card type should be listed and the Trait information should be right above the Game Text line.
Well, I have another suggestion for the Templates, namely: Auto-categorisation.
You can parse through the input variables to set the categories.
That would save alot of work in later releases and if you ever want to reorganize the categories you only need to change the templates, instead of every card.
I have done this a few times, it is not hard to get it to work.
